Automated Tests

Automated tests give you the confidence to make changes. While the rest of your world is full of fear and uncertainty, automated tests are always there for you as a stable and calming presence. They are the reliable friend who is there at three in the morning when you need them. They are the guardians of your code. They are, with my deepest apologies to George R.R. Martin, the Night’s Watch of the programming world:

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my deletion. I shall permit no null pointer exceptions, allow no off by 1 errors, accept no infinite loops. I shall deploy to no production server and win no glory. I shall live and die by my assertions. I am the mock object in the darkness. I am the watcher on the CI server. I am the shield that guards the realms of programmers. I pledge my life and honor to the automated test suite, for this night and all the nights to come.
